Why Self-Paced Learning Matters for Changemakers

Change work is rarely linear. It demands flexibility, reflection, and the freedom to learn in rhythm with your own life and community context. Our self-paced courses honor that reality. You can start when you are ready, pause when life calls, and return without losing your place. There are no deadlines, no live sessions to miss, and no pressure to keep up with anyone else. This format is especially valuable for those balancing activism, caregiving, full-time work, or study. Learning becomes a practice, not a race.

Self-paced also means you can revisit materials as often as you like. The ideas we explore—vision, engagement theory, arts-based inquiry—deepen with repetition. You might complete a course once for an overview, then return months later with a specific project in mind. The content remains yours. This approach reflects our belief that transformative learning is not a one-time event but an ongoing relationship with ideas, questions, and community.

What You Can Expect from Each Course

Every course in the Catalyzing Change Series is built around a shared structure designed to support deep learning without overwhelm. While each course has a distinct focus, you will encounter consistent elements that make the experience coherent and accessible.

We believe that learning is most powerful when it is both rigorous and humane. These courses are not about checking boxes; they are about building capacity for the long haul.

Who These Courses Are For

The Catalyzing Change Series is designed for a wide range of people who share a commitment to justice and transformation. You do not need a formal background in activism, academia, or the arts to benefit. What matters is your willingness to engage honestly and imagine boldly.

You might be a community organizer seeking new frameworks for your work, an educator wanting to bring creative methods into your classroom, a nonprofit leader exploring developmental evaluation, or an artist looking to connect your practice to social change. You might be a student, a retiree, a parent, or someone simply asking, “What is my role in building a better world?” These courses meet you where you are.

Because the content is self-paced and accessible online, you can participate from anywhere with an internet connection. We strive to make the material welcoming to diverse learners, including those who are new to online education.

How to Get Started

Beginning your journey is simple. You can enroll in the free introductory course, Catalyzing Change: Beyond Business, at any time. This course gives you a taste of our approach and helps you decide if the full series is right for you. From there, you can progress through the remaining courses in order or choose the topic that most speaks to your current needs.

We recommend starting with the introductory course even if you are eager to dive into a later topic. The foundational ideas introduced there will enrich your experience of the more advanced material. That said, each course is designed to stand alone, so you are welcome to explore in whatever sequence feels right.

Once enrolled, you will have ongoing access to the course materials. You can take as much time as you need, and you can return to the content whenever you wish. There is no expiration date on your learning.

A Note on the Creative Evaluation & Engagement Series

The Creative Evaluation & Engagement Series is currently in development, but we are excited about what it will offer. This series will build on the foundations of the Catalyzing Change Series, going deeper into developmental evaluation, principles-focused evaluation, and arts-based methods. It is designed for those who want to bring more creativity, equity, and healing into their evaluation and engagement practices.

We know that many changemakers are eager for these tools. Evaluation is often seen as dry or extractive, but it does not have to be. When done with care, evaluation can be a site of learning, relationship-building, and even joy. The Creative Evaluation & Engagement Series will offer practical guidance for designing evaluations that honor complexity and center the wisdom of communities.

If this resonates with you, we encourage you to sign up for updates. You will be the first to know when the series launches, and you will receive occasional insights and resources related to creative evaluation in the meantime. We are building this series with intention, and we look forward to sharing it with you when it is ready.

No. All you need is a device with an internet connection and a web browser. The courses are designed to be mobile-friendly, so you can learn on your phone, tablet, or computer.

How much time should I plan to spend?

Each course varies, but most learners spend between two and four hours per module. Because the courses are self-paced, you can spread this time out however you like. Some people complete a course in a weekend; others take several months.
